Effects of Gehl’s urban design guidelines on walkability: A virtual reality experiment in Singaporean public housing estates

چکیده
Walkability has become an important theme of urban design research and practice. Evidence suggests that environmental attractiveness can have a significant impact on the amount walking activities take place, but relatively little exists which features linked to increase walkability. Using virtual reality experiment, present study examined effects walkability three key features, as defined by Jan Gehl, influential planning practitioner theorist: liveliness, high-quality façades low buildings. A simulation allowed isolating these while avoiding confounding factors, such presence shops, been difficult do in past field studies. Our confirmed combination recommended Gehl promoted activity study’s context. Further exploratory analyses suggested improved façade quality was positively activity, building height liveliness had negligible effects. findings contribute existing understanding walkability, may benefit practice models is necessary confirm our results regarding specific different contexts.

Can virtual reality exposure therapy be used to treat people with social phobia? To answer this question it is vital to known if people will respond to virtual humans (avatars) in a virtual social setting in the same way they would to real humans. If someone is extremely anxious with real people, will they also be anxious when faced with simulated people, despite knowing that the avatars are co...

Virtual Reality for Enhanced Urban Design
The application of virtual reality to cultural heritage, environment, and landscape planning is extremely useful to experiment various scenarios which could not be necessarily realised in the real world; both for educational and research purposes. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how 3D representations can be utilised as a valid support for urban planners and designers in order to verify...
